Pollinators and urban greenery: Life BEEadapt interventions in Aprilia

The Municipality of Aprilia is one of the partners of the Life BEEadapt project, within which it manages a pilot area corresponding to the municipal territory. The project’s activities are diverse and multi-objective, ranging from recruiting companies and industries to sign agreements for the protection of pollinating insects to coordinating the implementation of green infrastructure in local farms and in Parco Europa, an urban green area. All these actions aim to enhance the territory’s suitability for pollinating insects while also raising awareness and meeting the community’s needs for green space enjoyment.

At Parco Europa, the planned interventions began in late October, including the planting of trees selected by the University of Camerino to support the presence of pollinators. In addition to the trees, aromatic plant hedges will be planted along the park’s paths, and ten bee hotels (structures providing shelter for pollinators) will be installed near the educational garden run by the nearby school. A flower meadow will also be created to attract pollinating insects and make the urban area more enjoyable for citizens, especially in Spring and Summer. Visitors to the park will benefit from more shade, cooler temperatures, and fragrant scents during the warmer seasons!

The work at Parco Europa was designed by Telos srl and is coordinated by the Municipality of Aprilia. As of January 2025, the planned interventions have been completed.

One of the local entities involved in the project is the Mardero Educational Farm, which often hosts educational activities for children and young people to raise awareness about environmental issues. Like any farm, the Mardero Farm benefits from the presence of pollinators in its area. Thanks to the Life BEEadapt project, it has already expanded its lavender field and planted Mediterranean shrub species that attract pollinators. Fruit trees will also soon be planted, completing the planned green infrastructure. This will not only enrich the farm’s educational path with new elements but also provide pollinators with a more comprehensive habitat, creating a more pleasant environment for human well-being as well.
